Bumble Bytes Ltd · Contract software engineering

Cloud, data and AI systems, built and run in production.

I'm Liam Warner. Through Bumble Bytes I design, build and run data pipelines, machine-learning services and backend systems. For the past year I've been on contract to a Fortune 500 media company, and I also develop formally verified FPGA image-processing IP.

What I do

Full-lifecycle delivery across cloud, data and machine learning.

Most projects need more than one specialism. Bumble Bytes covers the whole lifecycle: design and estimates, build, deployment, and handover to your team.

Data platforms and pipelines

Event-driven ingestion on AWS, streaming and batch processing on Databricks and BigQuery, all defined in Terraform with CI/CD behind it.

Machine learning in production

Audio and video ML services: training-data tooling, labelling and review apps, model training and model-serving APIs, connected to the systems that use them.

Backend systems and APIs

Node.js, TypeScript and Python services, payments and authentication, test automation, and the pipelines that keep releases routine.

FPGA and digital hardware

Verilog image-processing IP with machine-checked proofs, measured on three FPGA families and running on real silicon.

Backend Developer

Thrive Mental Wellbeing
  • One of two developers on the Node.js backend behind the company's modern and legacy web and mobile apps.
  • Ran cloud infrastructure, test automation and CI/CD across several cloud providers and product types: serverless, auto-scaling services, BigQuery and S3.
  • Worked directly with corporate clients, marketing and medical teams to scope, estimate and deliver features in an agile sprint cycle.
  • Built Angular frontend components alongside the backend features.

Backend and Game Systems Developer

Nimoyd, a Tencent-funded indie studio
  • Designed and built a scalable backend for a mod and asset marketplace, comparable to the Roblox and Minecraft marketplaces, including payments, syncing and downloads.
  • Integrated Epic Online Services, cloud saves and third-party OAuth login across Unity (C#) and Node.js.
  • Created an incremental modding system on Unity's asset packages that kept player downloads small.
  • Reviewed and supervised the work of a junior developer.

Backend and Automation Engineer

ZeroLight
  • Built a distributed, networked, graphical test-automation suite based on image analysis, combining Unity (C#), Node.js, Selenium and Python.
  • Integrated it with React frontends. By the time I left it was in use across the company's whole product line.

Products and open source

Alongside client work, Bumble Bytes builds its own products.

FPGA / ASIC IP

RankFilter

Median, percentile and defect-pixel-correction cores for FPGA and ASIC video. A 5×5 median needs 52 comparators per pixel where the best known single-window design needs 85. Every network is proved correct in Lean 4, and the cores run on Intel Cyclone V silicon.

Working with Bumble Bytes

What clients get

  • A senior engineer who owns the outcome: design, estimates, build, deployment and a clean handover.
  • Clear communication with non-engineers. I've worked directly with clients, marketing and medical teams.
  • Automated tests and CI on every project, and formal proofs where a mistake would be expensive.
  • A UK limited company, fully insured for professional indemnity and public liability.
Engagements

Contracts and IP licensing

Contract engagements, remote or on site by arrangement, and licences for the RankFilter FPGA and ASIC IP. Send a short description of the work and I'll reply with availability and next steps.
